Glitius Decianus was a 33 year old, equestrian, holding the Imperial appointment of Procurator of Belgica. This meant that he was in charge of the finance of the province and answerable to the Emperor rather than the Senate. As an equestrian he was lower than the Senators in status but still a wealthy man by the standards of the Empire as a whole. After the sack of Rome a few of his letters were found on the floor of the ruined Senate house. These give a flavour of what they were telling the Emperor/Senate before they finally decided to march on Rome.
