His unit were a recently formed tank unit of the East German Volkspolizei (there is no East German army at this point). This door lead onto a tunnel that formed part of the sewer system of Berlin. She didn't have proper papers and obviously had lacked some education but was very pretty and pretty cheery, and more to the point keen to do just about anything for some decent money.
